The Festival Tallinn 2022 - Mauritz — Day 1d Chip Leader Gandalf the Pink

Bregging Rights: Bregy Leads Day 1c Survivors 30.06.2022 20:16 by The Festival Team

Day 1c is in the bag, as it were, and the final numbers on that were 250, of whom 88 have made it through to Day 2. Top of the chip count pops is Gregory Bregy on 209,100 – currently good enough for the overall chip lead.

The 88 Day 1c survivors join the 22 who made it through from Day 1a and the 48 from Day 1b – but that’s not all. The first three starting flights drew a total of 431 entries, but Day 1d is barely getting going with 42 entries registered so far, and registration will remain open right through the first two levels of Day 2 tomorrow. By then, blinds will be 1,500/3,000, so €550 will get you all of 10 big blinds – just like in the good old days. So if you’ve failed to bag up for Day 2, don’t worry – relax, pull up a drink, and eventually buying straight in to Day 2 will probably seem like a very good idea.

Elsewhere in the spacious confines of the Olympic Casino and Hilton Park Hotel, a variety of side events have been playing out today. The €225 + €25 HORSE event drew 64 entries of whom 22 remain at time of writing, and the €100 + €15 Half & Half is currently at 42/113 and you can actually watch a feature table from that on the live stream right now, with expert commentary from George Sandford.

Owing to the super-late reg format, it’s hard to say exactly how many players we’ll have when the Main Event resumes tomorrow at noon, nor what they’ll be playing for – be sure to tune back in to find out more info as we get it.

Tomorrow’s side events include the Pokerlistings Deepstack and the High Roller – both two-day events – as well as the hilarious €300 + €30 Open Face Chinese, and the finals of the equally amusing Blackjack and Roulette championships. Edgars Beizaks was one of the most active players during this day. Although he managed to run his starting stack up to 90k at some point this day, he just now lost his last chips against Terje Sirnes.

It all began with Heikki Rahikka opening from MP to 3k. Beizaks called behind him and now Sirnes reraised from the cut-off to 11k. Rahikka and Beizaks called.

Flop: J 7 3 . After Rahikka checked, Beizaks moved all-in for his remaining 8.4k chips. Behind him, Sirnes moved all-in for more than 90k and Rahikka folded.

Beizaks showed down Q J for top pair and Sirnes turned over A A for an overpair, leaving Beizaks drawing to five outs. Turn and river fell 6 , K – no help for Beizaks and he had to take his leave.

Meanwhile, the tournament director announced the last hands and the first players started bagging their chips.

Over at table 4, two of the bigger stacks of Day 1c are sitting close to each other and both just clashed in a pot worth 95k.

With 40k in the middle, we arrived at a turn which read 10 7 6 7 and both players checked. As the river came down 2 Gregory Bregy bet 27.5k and Vygerdas Jonikas called rather quickly.

Gregory Bregy turned over 10 8 for top pair with no kicker. Apparently, this was good enough as Jonikas mucked his hand. Bregy has a commanding chip lead at his table for now.

With 25 minutes to go until the start of Day 1d, only 10 players have signed up for the turbo-format final starting flight – to be fair, I think quite a lot of players opted to go to the player party on the terrace upstairs instead, and judging by the number of bodies lurching around the hallway in a manner suggesting they may have had a drink or two, I think a fair few of them may decide to just buy straight in to Day 2 tomorrow instead.

If you do fancy a punt on Day 1d, play will be kicking off at 8pm, and the structure will be exactly the same as for Days 1a through 1c, except with 20 minute levels and a much higher proportion of extremely drunk people in the field. Good luck!

David Clark five-bet jammed a six-figure stack from the big blind with ace-king and was called by Shahin Nejad with cowboys.

Nejad was ahead and the odds were further in his favor after the ten-trey-deuce flop. The jack turn also gave Clark a Broadway draw on top of the possibility of winning a hand if an ace came on the river. No love came Clark’s way with a trey pairing the board on the river to earn the always friendly Nejad a double-up.

Not too long ago, poker streamer Steven “BlindGuy789” Iglesias was at a starting stack. He now is at 90,000 in chips in what he described to the table after the hand as a “low-frequency play.”

Iglesias three-bet jammed for 60 big blinds with ten-eight suited over a raise and a call. The original raiser called with cowboys. Despite being far behind, Iglesias had his opponent drawing dead after the turn with a straight with the jack-seven-deuce-nine on the board.

David Clark was the first player eliminated on Day 1c. He had the seat closest to the bar but perhaps that wasn’t enough for him.

We asked him how he got up to 130,000 and did learn a few hands that didn’t go to showdown. That being said, he doesn’t fully credit the cards.

“After being the first player out, I headed to the bar for a while,” Clark said. “It is why my second bullet has gone better.”

Over at table 12, we just witnessed a battle of the short stacks. After an open-raise the young Fin Ingvar Linne moved all-in for 15k with 6 6 . Behind him, Aiste Paskeviciute (who had him barely covered) looked down at 9 9 and re-shoved for 18k. After the original raiser folded the two saw a showdown.

The dealer fanned 10 3 2 2 K and Paskeviciute won the pot with the slightly better flush as Linne exited the tournament.

Table 3 is having a lot of fun – perhaps too much fun. They’re betting on what colour card will be the first out on the flop, although there seems to be some confusion over whether you drink if you get it right or if you get it wrong. Anyway, more shots have been ordered to the table, and the first card out this time is red.

“So we’re all drinking this time,” says Oskar Engvall.

“No, no one drinks,” Edgars Beizaks corrects him.

“Please, play the hand,” sighs their weary dealer.

“I feel like I’m in the naughty corner,” says James Sudworth. Motioning towards the dealer: “She scares me a bit, but I quite like it. This table’s much more fun than that other one I was on earlier.”

Naughty corner pretty much sums it up. Another hand is dealt and Engvall downs a very large shot of something murky-brownish and sticky-looking, while the hapless dealer tries to get the attention of various players, who are busy offering to hold back the hair of their tablemates in the bathroom later when whatever’s in the shot glasses inevitably comes back up. As I retreat, I hear the phrase “flaccid penis” and lots of giggling, along with a big sigh from the dealer. Anyway, here are some chip counts:

Over at table nine, we just saw the Spaniard David Carrasco lose his last all-in (during his first bullet today). After a player opened from early position he called with A 9 in middle position. Behind him, Tormod Ludvigsen made it 6k (or 10 big blinds) to go and after the initial raiser folded, Carrasco called.

The flop brought three queens: Q Q Q and Carrasco checked to Ludvigsen who bet 10k. Now Carrasco quickly moved all-in for a bit over 20k. The raise was promptly called and Ludvigsen tabled a better Ace, A K . This hand held after turn and river bricked and Tormod Ludvigsen is up to over 100k now.

Vygerdas Jonikas was sitting on 128,000 at the break. His son, Pijus Jonikas was also in the Main Event but is now railing his father.

Pijus shared with us a couple of hands that helped his father snag one of the biggest stacks in the room on Day 1c.

First, he found some small value with eight-deuce suited on a queen-jack-eight-eight-queen board.

A bigger pot was soon to follow when his aces held against queens in a pot north of 60,000. While Pijus will likely not re-enter, he at least has a nice sweat thanks to Vygerdas.

Noelia Ivars won more than one seat to The Festival Series Main Event and now her tickets are going to good use after just hitting the rail on a cooler.

We had Ivars on nearly 50,000 in chips but these are now with another player. She got it in on a ten-high flop with cowboys. This would be good in many cases but in this case, she was up against an opponent with sixes and there was a six on the flop. No save came on the turn and the river and Ivars will re-enter and try again.

Shortly after this hand, players went on a 20-minute break.

Over at table 16, we just witnessed Boris Smolianskii win a huge pot against Edgars Beizaks.

Smolianskii, who held Q-Q raised before the flop and Beizaks 3-bet from the blinds. Smolianskii 4-bet and Beizaks quickly moved all-in for effectively 80 big blinds. Beizaks showed down A-K and a race was underway. The board gave Smolianskii a set, coming down Q-9-6-3-K, giving him a double up.

Engvall to Donate Half His Winnings to Swedish Breast Cancer Foundation 30.06.2022 15:44 by The Festival Team

Oskar Engvall is quietly building a stack and is on 70,000. Reporters aren’t supposed to choose favorites but in this case, I won’t be shy to say I am rooting for Engvall to win The Festival Series Tallinn trophy along with what promises to be a massive top prize.

It isn’t just because Engvall is a good dude. There are lots of amazing ladies and men in the field. It is because Engvall plans to donate half his earnings in the Main Event to the Swedish Breast Cancer Foundation.

Unfortunately, Engvall’s sister (and our colleague Jesper Larsson’s wife) is suffering from terminal breast cancer. The family is supportive but it can’t be easy.

You may notice that perhaps the most photogenic player in the field, 2012 Miss Finland Sara Chafak, is not doing terribly well, having lost almost two thirds of her starting stack. After watching multiple hands where the player with top pair lost, we just got to a witness one where top pair was actually good. “Witness” is a strong term here as we only arrived at the table when the action was done and over.

But we saw a board of Q-9-6-3-7 and lots of chips in the middle, at least 20k. Rolf Woods bet another 10k and Ilvars Gudrimovics called. Woods turned over 9-8 for second pair. Gudrimovics triumphantly showed A-Q for top pair and raked in this 40k pot.

Today’s offering: chargrilled turkey steak with hollandaise sauce; carrots and what I think is swede cut up into little cubes and roasted with rosemary; and a salad containing iceberg lettuce, raw peppers and onions, and, bafflingly, cantaloupe melon. Plus some very fresh bread, and the same whipped butter, flavoured with something greenish and unidentifiable but not unpleasant, although today it’s straight from the fridge so it’s not as squishy and melty as it was yesterday (although it might be by the time you get to it). Honestly, it’s not quite as good as yesterday’s offering (where are the potatoes??), and the unexpected chunks of melon in the salad have a slight air of “left over from the breakfast buffet” about them, but overall it’s not a bad plate of food at all, especially for €13. Tickets are available from the bar, and you can find the buffet on your left as you head out of the tournament area until 6pm.

David Clark, who is already on his 2nd bullet after busting out as the first player today, lost most of his chips after rivering the same hand type – apparently, top pair is not always a monster…

We arrived at his table with the board reading 9 7 2 7 and 12k in the middle. Clark checked and his opponent Viktor Persson bet 7k. Clark called the bet. The river brought the Q and again Clark checked. Now Persson made it 12k and Clark quickly called. He turned over K Q for a rivered top pair.

But his top pair was no match against Persson’s boat with 9 7 .

Algina Juknaite qualified with yours truly into the Main Event in a satellite near our homes in Vilnius. Unfortunately, neither of us has stacks. While I never entered, things went a bit differently for Juknaite who had slightly more than a starting stack at the first break.

Juknaite just ran into some bad luck or at least no good luck came her way. She first lost a huge pot to leave her with about 10,000 when her ace-king didn’t win a flip against jacks. Sadly, she then got jacks and was unable to win a flip against ace-king for the rest of her chips.

The Lithuanian is deciding whether or not to get back into the Main Event or play some cash games on the casino floor. Sekmes (good luck) to Juknaite regardless of what she chooses.

A rather tough beat sent the Swede Niklas Blomqvist to the rails. We arrived at his table with the board reading K 6 2 –5 on the turn with roughly 12k in the middle. Blomqvist, who was in the big blind bet 6,500 and his lone opponent Henri Wagner in middle position called. On the 3 turn Blomqvist moved all-in for roughly 17k and Wagner instantly called, turning over 6 6 for a set. Blomqvist showed A K for top pair which wasn’t nearly enough in this situation.

Over at table 17 Stig Gronas, who was down to half the starting stack lost his last all-in and hit the rails. After Toomas Makikokko raised from late position, Gronas 3-bet to 3k from the blinds and Makikokko moved all-in for 17k. Gronas decided to call and moved his remaining 15k in the middle.

Gronas showed J-T and Makikokko had him dominated with K-K. The board brought no help coming down K-J-7-5-A and Stig Gronas wished everyone at the table good luck as he made his way out.

“Unlucky. Very, very unlucky.” I’m afraid I couldn’t get any more information out of Franke von Zweigbergk than that, but whatever happened, he is no longer in the running on Day 1c of the Main Event. Time will tell whether he fires another bullet at this flight or waits until Day 1d this evening at 8pm. Or indeed just focusses his energy on the Flips event.

Other players who have tried and failed at securing a stack in Day 1c so far include Jake O’Leary and beer pong champion Niklas Winterstein.

Meanwhile, a few more familiar faces have appeared at the tables/lurking at the bar in search of coffee and/or beer, including James Sudworth (whom you may remember from such exploits as finalling the MPNPT in Madrid, and coming seventh in a 2009 WSOP 6-Max event – ouch) and Jan Karlsson who came second in the Swedish Championships here in Tallinn last summer. We’re up to 186 entries in Day 1c so far, of whom 156 have chips.

Thor Dahlbeck checked with 9,000 in the pot and the 2 3 6 A on the board after the turn before Dan Wald bet 3,300. Vladislavs Petrovs called as did Dahlbeck.

The 9 completed the board on the river and both Dahlbeck and Wald checked. Petrovs jammed for 19,800. Dahlbeck folded and Wald called. Petrovs showed A 3 for two pair and won the hand to more than double his stack after Wald mucked his cards.

Gronli got out of his chair looking ready to go despite two live cards. The K turn paired up Kivi but also gave Gronli some hope with a flush draw. All hope went out the window and he left the tournament area at least for now after a blank J river completed the board.

Not going to lie, I initially set out to get a chip count for Sara Chafak to give me an excuse to post a photo of our actual, real Miss Finland, but I soon ended up noting how, while still a minority, the female turnout for this event is actually not too bad, in the grand scheme of things. The action has been much wilder on Day 1c with more of the field feeling a bit of gamble in them with players 300 big blinds deep for the first two blind levels of the day.

There was around 80,000 in the pot with Simon Stromberg committing his last 20,000 in chips in the pot and Jonas Sundin with about 25,000 committed. Thor Dahlbeck had both players covered along and the cards were turned over.

Sundin was in an amazing spot to snag a healthy pot with his cowboys but quickly needed help as did Stromberg from the start after Dahlbeck’s ace connected with the J A 5 flop. Sven-Ake Willix opened for 300 from early position and got a call by Jakob Matusiak from the cutoff. Krystian Nalepka three-bet to 1,400 from the button. Willix promptly fired out a massive four-bet to 10,000. Matusiak quickly folded and Nalepka went into the tank.

“I guess you have a big hand,” Nalepka said.

About 30 seconds later, Nalepka folded and showed Q Q .

“Sorry,” said Willix.

“Show just one?” asked Nalepka.

Willix complied and showed the A as the dealer awarded him the pot.

David Clark was the first player eliminated on Day 1c. His chips got into the middle on the turn with A Q against the big slick held by Benjamins Fonarjovs with the ace-nine-five-king with two of the cards diamonds on the turn. A brick hit the river for Clark and he went out for a beer before continuing with his plans to re-enter the Main Event.

Meanwhile, Jari Mahonen, Dan Wald, and Jonas Sundin hit the rail in the final minutes of the opening blind level. We may see this trio again if they decide to re-enter like Clark has.

Wow, that was quick – not even a full level in, and we’ve already beaten Day 1b’s 123-strong field. We currently have 124 entries in Day 1c, of whom 123 are still in possession of chips. The hapless first elimination was Britain’s David Clark just a few minutes ago, although we strongly suspect that he’ll buy straight back in, plus his wife Teresa Clark is still on her first bullet, and they seem like the kind of relationship-goals couple who’d swap a percentage at the very least.

Also in the field at the moment are Coolbet’s Svein Olav, fresh (ish) off his fourth place finish in last night’s Acroud Charity Invitational, Norwegian grassroots stalwart Rolf Woods, and beer pong champion Niklas Winterstein.

Poker players are obviously an extremely attractive lot all round, and The Festival players especially so, but particularly turning heads in today’s Main Event field is former Miss Finland Sara Chafak. Aside from her obvious charms, you may remember Chafak from that eye-watering bluff she pulled on Ronnie Bardah on Shark Cage; if she’s attempted anything similarly tricksy in Level 1, nobody was biting, and she’s still on almost exactly her 30k starting stack. The Festival Tallinn 2022 - Acroud Charity Tournament

Welcome to Day 1c of The Festival Series €550 Main Event at Olympic Park Casino and the Hilton Tallinn Park.

The action is scheduled to kick off at noon with already 50 players registered and many more to come. As was the case on both Day 1a and Day 1b, players will start with a deep stack of 30,000 in chips with blinds increasing slowly at every 45 minutes. In addition, players can re-enter twice per opening flight and players will bag up their stacks after 10 blind levels of action.

The final opening flight will also take place tonight at 8 p.m. with Day 1d being a turbo-charged affair boasting 20-minute blind levels.

Surviving players from both opening flights will join those that found a bag on Day 1a and Day 1b on Friday for Day 2. Players can still get into the action on Day 2 with late registration open for the first two blind levels of the day.
